Pros
Pro Simplistic art style and graphics that run on low to mid-range computers
Utilizing a voxel-based engine and minimalistic art style, 8-Bit Armies is capable of running on mid-range computers and laptops. Needing a 2.6GHZ processor and 4 Gigabytes of RAM, the title requires little in the way of resources, while testing the power of lower-end machines.
Pro Fast-paced matches make for short gameplay sessions
Everything in 8-Bit Armies was designed to be fast, whether it be construction times, training times, or unit speed. For example, Barracks take ten seconds to build, with infantry being trained every three seconds. Due to the high speed and low cost of each unit, players can quickly amass a large army capable of crippling an enemy base. In addition to this, units will be trained faster for every respective unit production facility that you build. This gives the player the means to overpower and overwhelm their foe with great speed, allowing matches to be completed in a short amount of time.
Pro Classic Real-Time Strategy gameplay
With the evolution of the Real-Time Strategy genre into Real-Time Tactics, 8-Bit Armies is a successful throwback to simpler gaming times, with resources gathering, quickly amassing large bases and armies and hurling them toward your enemies. Additionally, no upgrades are required to increase a player's unit effectiveness; needing only corresponding tech buildings to be constructed in order to build higher-tier vehicles, which matches the simplistic style of the game.
Pro Easy to pick up for newcomers
For those new to the Real-Time Strategy gaming scene, 8-Bit Armies offers a relatively easy and straightforward approach to the genre that is easy to pick up and learn. This then paves the way for players to go deeper into the genre, finding more complicated games that fill the void they are looking for. Thus 8-Bit Armies serves as a wonderful stepping stone toward even better titles.
Cons
Con Too simplistic for Real-Time Strategy veterans that expect more
With the lack of any tech trees, or upgrades to improve units, like what is seen in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and StarCraft 2, some players may see this simplistic approach to the RTS genre boring. Needing only sheer numbers and balancing of proper units, there is little else this game offers in ways to overcome your foes.
Con Campaign is greatly lacking
While the gameplay itself is minimalistic, the campaign is egregiously so, with little in the way of story. Indeed, the only story bits you will find come from the small paragraph that awaits you at each mission select screen, that details what you need to do in the level chosen. This gives the player little reason to participate in anything outside of Multi-Player.
