Full disclosure: I am now on the team of the development studio myself, but I first followed this game as a fan for several months. I was initially drawn in by the realistic sci-fi setting and the promise of a grind-free experience. I loved Eve Online and Elite Dangerous, but dropped out of both because of the in-game waiting times for which I simply don't have the time anymore. Your actions matter - PvP is meaningful

If you kill someone else, they're dead and you can loot their corpse. They don't get it back, or respawn with the same ship a few minutes later. This makes PvP highly exhilarating and really gets the blood pumping. See More

Toxic community

Lose everything you spent 6 months building because you can be attacked anywhere. The perpetrators do it because they say they love the tears and then tell the victims to go play WoW instead and Eve Online is not for everyone. The player base plummets and the PvPers blame CCP, the devs, for a decreasing number of potential targets, because they say the game has become too "carebear" friendly. A large driver of the game is an external site called Killboardz that tracks your ship kill/loss ratios. The emphasis is on quantity of kills and not quality. This means many successful players will evade difficult fights and will prey on the weakest and mostly newer players. See More

It's about screwing over customers for as much $$$ as they will tolerate; pay to play greed at its worst

The custom appearances are hastily built and don't even look good. The worst is that CCP indirectly supports those who are cheating. There are a few corps that post videos of them clearly cheating and yet they are not punished. It seems clear that the ISD members signing the confidentiality agreements are causing players to lose ships and encouraging them to pay real money to replace them. The new content is hardcore and buggy forcing a lot players to spend money besides their monthly sub fee or quit. The PvE content is minimal and redundant. The Pvp content is a joke. Gang bang abushes or religious fanatic style suiciding. No ladders. No Ranking. See More

I've been playing this game for a loooooong time. There's a lot to eve - you don't just finish the main quest and get the movie trailer. Through hard work and player interactions, you can create a powerful empire, and through hubris and failure of diplomacy, watch it die. As in life, there is almost never such a thing as a fair fight. While much of the game is (reasonably) safe, much more is quite unsafe. you can, indeed, mine for a month and buy a pimped-out ship, only to watch it die in the first combat, even against NPCs. The fundamental rule of eve: don't fly what you can't afford to lose. Carefully examine what you figure you can achieve, and compare it to what you might lose. Just like Real Life (tm). Follow this rule, and you'll do OK. Otherwise, yes, stick to WoW. That said, making enough money in eve to afford an entertaining playstyle is not terribly difficult, and empire space is pretty safe, even for noobs. See More

A consistent sandbox game unfairly maligned for not being "progression on rails"

CCP refuses to dumb down the game for casual subscriptions that would end up being short term anyway. Though many features have been added, the game play has remained consistent for over a decade, making for a complex but knowable game. Yes, the game is the "Wild West". Some places are like Kansas City, others are like Tombstone, Arizona. There is always danger. What fun is a game without it? But you can pick your level of danger. You will blunder into bad situations, but is there an MMO where you can't end up in a place far above your level, and is it really fun for a game to be a nice, safe "playpen"? Yes, there are griefers who enjoy being flamed at by angry players. This complaint is not about the game, but about a small subset of gamers found in all multiplayer games. The vast majority of Eve players are mature and even helpful. Yes, if you stuff everything you have into a ship all at once and fly out into the void, you can lose it all. "Losing six months of work" is just nonsense. If you get killed, you should always have many other ships to fly somewhere safe, even if you're nowhere near being good at PvP. The heightened challenge that other players provide over some AI is nice, because it makes it so much sweeter when you beat a gatecamp or a mining gank. Yes, the game economy is complex enough that some people actually use spreadsheets. It isn't a requirement. If you just want to shoot, loot, and sell, it's no different than any other game. Yes, there are scammers, but nobody can just steal anything from your inventory. What you turn over to anyone is by deliberate actions only, again, like any other MMO. Yes, you are at a disadvantage early on in PvP. Name a game where you can start out in PvP with the same gear and skills as everyone else. The way training scales, you won't be at a huge disadvantage for that long. Eve is unlike most other MMOs in a great many respects, and like any game won't be for everyone. But it really should be judged on its own merits, not berated simply for not being another game. See More

Played the game for many years in it's heyday. Gotta wrap your mind around the idea that there are (npc) police, in any system rated 0.5 through 1.0 The higher the number, the more police, the faster the response, the less likely for a true gank to succeed. Don't touch anyone else's loot container, or they can legally defend "their possessions." and fire on you. Worst case for you is if you screw up (and some1 ingame will tell you that is an ok move) in 1.0 space and get the police on YOU. You have legal right to take something in a trade screen (when I played, that was only in station, idk about currently) and to trade on the market ( again in a station only, when I played, may have changed). Be smart, be careful, and you can carebear all you want and blow kisses at the carebear greifers. See More

Lots of time spent driving around, a few really nasty players

If you KISS (keep it simple, stupid) it helps, but dealing with travel, inventory management and admin can be a significant part of this game. As an experienced player, I recommend using an "I don't want to mess with items under X value" approach and simply reprocessing or scrapping anything below that. And yes, there are flat-out sociopathic people here, and even just regular jerks who would like nothing better than getting you angry and ranting. Eve is not politically correct, and is moderately right-wing as a rule. Don't feel afraid to ignore buttheads. Realize that with some people, it's simply impossible to "win" the argument or get them to treat you nicely, and that if they hurt your feelings or offend you, CCP in all likelihood won't do anything about it. The devs are easily some of the worst I've ever seen. You see all the complaints about loot boxes in games like SWB2? They are innocent compared to the horror that is STO. Sure you -can- get everything in game that you can pay for, but if you want to be a competitive player, you better have deep pockets. You can have 5 ship traits, but you only get those from t6 ships and each one is $30 or 4 months of daily refinement of your limit in dilithium, which you also need an obscene amount for upgrading gear or even getting the best gear in the first place. The best ships for ship traits are even in loot boxes/packs with really bad odds for getting. Point is, this game is nothing but a giant money grab from a developer that doesn't give two sh**s about it's players. See More

Way to many broken graphics, and the devs don't even listen to the players anymore. Used to be fun when you would go from system to system. Took months to level, but at least there was alot to see. Since the updates, the graphics have been weirdly buggy (the floating Iconian gateway pieces, and you can see through the sandy parts to some strange statues which belong in another area of the game) since the last six updates. The game play just gets boringly repetitive, and the end game grind for marks is enough to put anyone to sleep. See More

Elite Dangerous uses publicly available real world star maps that we have of the Milky Way consisting of 150,000 star systems. Although in the current beta, full access to the entire galaxy is limited, in the final game, you will be able to visit any of the 400 billion stars in our galaxy on a 1:1 scale. Stars that we do know of are properly mapped in place and are of the correct type given the information we have about them. Stars we haven't collected data on are procedurally generated which allows you to explore any of the 400 billion of them. Star systems are intelligently simulated using the "Star Forge", a generator that simulates the creation of a star system forming from its nebular cloud to determine what celestial bodies appear and what orbits they have. Elite Dangerous has very good integration with the Oculus Rift thanks to its cockpit view only gameplay philosophy. All ship UIs are part of displays that appear on each side of you that appear when you turn your head, so accessing the navigation or ship menus happens seamlessly just by looking in their direction. The game also uses the direction you are looking in for targeting, so your lock on target is whatever you're head is pointing at. By sitting in the cockpit of a ship, you are given a stationary frame of reference that helps prevent motion sickness associated with movement in game when you aren't actually moving. See More

Not enough data, hints and tips to know what to do, you will find yourself looking in the internet to find things that Frontier should have in game. Game support sucks, no answers. Penalties given to players for ingame violations are way too harsh and unjust. No protection from NPC or human players, anyone can shoot at you anytime, the penalty for criminal behavious is ridiculous. NPC battle way too harsh and difficult for a newbie. Mining is dull. Travelling is long and boring. Gameplay requires to be a pilot. Time to travel from stations is also unbeliavable high ! Literally had 1 hour trip and was simply staring my screen. In Warframe, you're able to play as one of the many Warframes, which are essentially character classes. You start off by choosing one of the three basic frames. Excalibur who specializes in swords and has an ability to equip an energy sword and shoot beams of energy. Volt who uses electricity to boost his damage, movement speed and attack speed. Or Mag, a frame specializing in magnetism and controlling the enemy. After that you can run missions to find plans for new ones, or purchase them with platinum (the real-money currency). There are currently more than 30 basic Warframes and their "Prime" variants, which are superior versions of the basic frames. See More

Can get repetitive easily

At the very core, Warframe is a game that needs a lot of grinding. You'll always be grinding for new blueprints, relics, materials, credits or just leveling your existing equipment. After a while some of the mission types such as defense (where you fend of waves of enemies), will get really boring. Then it turns out the blueprint or relic is really rare and you'll probably have to repeat that mission about a hundred more times. Coupled with the fact that there's no real progression outside the Mastery Rank, some players may quickly lose interest. See More

A huge array of weaponry

Warframe boasts over 300 weapons, split into 3 classes: Primary, Secondary, and Melee. Primary weapons are the big guns such as assault rifles, shotguns, bows, and grenade launchers. Secondary weapons are the sidearms, usually handguns, machine pistols, and thrown weapons. The melee weapons consist of swords (even katanas), hammers, fist weapons, scythes, and others. Most of the weapons have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. For example, the Simulor is a weapon which creates small balls similar to black holes, which pull in and kill enemies. Unfortunately, the range is very short, so you'll have to predict enemy movements and place the shots carefully. Another example is the Zarr, a massive canon, which has two firing modes, allowing you to use it as a canon or a shotgun. The downside is that you'll get damaged by your own explosions, so you have to always keep distance. The weapons can also be upgraded, adding various elemental damage types such as radiation or corrosion. You can also improve other stats such as rate of fire, crit or reload speed. See More

Warframe was released in 2012 and has received a lot of improvements over the years. This includes updating the old tilesets with new textures, which has caused a lot of performance drops. Warframes are essentially space ninjas that can move incredibly fast. Just running won't be enough, so you'll have to build momentum by sliding, jumping, and rolling. Each of these moves also help you dodge enemy attacks, while allowing you to attack. It takes a while to get used to the fast pace, but when you do, it feels incredibly satisfying. See More

Many online titles and MMOs feature combat with poor contact physics, so it often feels like you're not actually hitting the enemies. Forever in development

Instead of getting all the core mechanics, and absolute basics actually working (which would then make a non-release harder to excuse), they keep adding “new tech” and increasing the scope. Some of that new tech is actually impressive while some isn't really new and is getting reinvented and explained in a very tech-heavy way that only sounds amazing making people get off their case. A working “base” game could have been released years ago, with them adding to it and building on it. There will always be new tech around the corner. This is why not having a clear end goal or end scope means we will end up having the same conversation/discussion in 10 years where there will be an even newer tech on the horizon that must be added before a release. It's never good enough and it's based on a budget that’s only limited if backers stop backing it by buying ships etc., it's a dream of the current CEO and no one is waking him up. Update: With all that being said you can honestly still very, very much enjoy it. Even with all the bugs, core mechanics weirdly not working, nonfunctional AI etc. etc. Just do not buy into it too much with your trust/hope or your money. Only pledge the starter ship at around 40 $. Definitely worth it. See More

I loved this game when it first came out as well as for almost two years thereafter. However in an effort to attract new users the devs seemed to alienate me with their "let's be more like WoW game mechanics. One of the reasons I left WoW to begin with was their changing out skill trees to where they no longer mattered. Sure lots of people max out whatever is needed for max dmg etc. but I want to shape and mold my character the way I choose even if to other people it is in inferior. Regardless there is a bunch of added content and Star Wars fans will like the story based quests if they pay attention to the storylines. The voice acting is top-notch and some still enjoy the game. I thought they fixed what wasn't brokjen however and i will likely never go back. See More

Title says most of it. Can gain days of "time spent" right out of the gate if you're willing to vote with your wallet. When most of the game is locked behind time gates, build times, movement times, etc - this is problematic and if done early game can and does heavily influence how powerful you will either be able to grow unhindered (or at all). This is without even considering the additional cost of contesting space against other players or the cost of taking over prime real estate from hostile or more advanced npc factions. Edit: Best not mention this in-game even as constructively as possible. You'll get roflstomped by people making truly weird arguments that this isn't actually p2w or pay for advantage in any way. Game breaking advantage? Maybe. That's the only thing I was wondering, but was smart enough not to even hint at in-game. Either way I got wolfpacked by players after that and left for good. See More
