 The gameplay is perfectly interwoven with the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of the game

The player is forced to move their character across the map in order to find objects of interest. This, coupled with the great sound design and soundtrack which also do their part in giving cues as to where the objects are and if the player is close, really help you immerse into the atmosphere and art style of Machinarium.

The main character and the one controlled by the player is just a normal, average, everyday robot. He doesn't have any special powers or abilities other than being able to slightly extend his midriff in order to reach high ledges or making his body shorter. He's pretty much an ordinary robot thrust into an extraordinary situation.

At points in the game there are needed items that blend in too well with their surrounding making it quite difficult to actually see them.

For those that do find some of the puzzles too challenging there is an inbuilt hint system shown through "thought bubbles" on top of the playable character. Every level has its own hint when pressed and it's usually a hint on where to go or what kind of object you need. Although it's advised not to rely on the hint system too much since it takes away from the experience of actually enjoying the game.

 The well-designed gameplay mechanics avoid making the game boring to the player

Unlike most point-and-click games, objects of interest in Machinarium light up only when the main character is close to them; this completely changes the way the game is played. In point-and-click games where this is not the case, the gameplay is usually reduced to aimlessly flailing the cursor around waiting for something to light up. Machinarium on the other hand completely avoids this, keeping levels interesting and the player interested to the game.

The Wolf Among Us is a murder mystery story that has great characters, action-packed moments, and really interesting twists. What's even better is that you can affect how the story plays out with dialogue options, investigation choices, and even actions during a fights or chase sequences. Your actions as a player have consequences in this story, which feels really nice.

The story takes place in a fictional part of Manhattan called Fabletown, which is inhabited by humans and creatures from fairy tales and folklore. It's really interesting seeing how everyone makes ends meet in an unfamiliar world. From working as a janitor or a receptionist to running a shady night club and abusing magic for extra profits. It's the type of setting that appeals to both the kid and the adult within you.

While most players will recognize fairy tale characters like Snow White or the Big Bad Wolf, there are many obscure characters such as Ichabod Crane or Bluebeard. Luckily enough, the game has an in-game encyclopedia that will update as you encounter new characters. Their encyclopedia entry will contain background info and the fairy tale they first appeared in while also providing insights on their current situation. The encyclopedia not only fills you in but also is a very enjoyable and interesting read.

Your job as the sheriff is to keep the others in line, so more than once you'll have to dirty your hands. There will be bruises, blood, broken bones, and even severed limbs. Each time you enforce order, an ugly reality will rear its head – you're just making everyone's miserable lives worse. If you're looking for positive vibes in this story, you won't find them.

As a point and click adventure game, there will be objects one needs to interact with or collect in each stage. Where trouble sets in is that some of these objects can be difficult to see as they blend in with the stage itself. While this does offer a hidden object aspects, it sometimes leads to being stuck as the object needed to progress is so hidden that the player just can not find it.

Voice actors deliver their lines with a lot of emotion, never feeling forced or fake. This excellent acting really helps draw you into the story and its characters. There's a lot of great chemistry between the various voice actors as well, resulting in conversations that flow well and sound very natural.

The Walking Dead tells a genuinely gripping story which can be a testing and exhausting experience for the player. It is told through the interactions between people fighting to survive in a new world in which resources are scarce and threats can come from both the living and the undead. Perhaps the major strength of the game in creating a compelling story telling experience is that it causes the player to care about the characters involved. This is an all too uncommon experience in gaming, and in The Walking Dead adds much greater meaning to the decisions which must be made along the way.

The Walking Dead requires that the player make decisions throughout, these typically will be in the form of action or conversation options. In many of these situations there is no obviously correct or best choice yet these decisions must be taken in stressful situations often giving a matter of seconds. They can be morally testing as you can attempt to do what is 'right', what is best for the group or what is best for yourself as well having differing repercussions on how your character is perceived by different people.

Even if you don't read the comic or watch the TV show, you can still play and enjoy this game. It's a completely standalone story. While there are some mild easter eggs for fans of the show/comic, you can still understand the game just fine without any prior knowledge of The Walking Dead.

There is no in-game hint system to help them when they run into the few unintuitive puzzles, meaning the player will either have to tough it out, or consult an online guide. Both of which can be immersion breaking and disrupts the flow of enjoyment of the game.

Many of the puzzles in this game have multiple solutions which lead to different story paths. For example, during one scene, the robots can attempt to persuade a self-aware virus to stop its destructive behavior, or they can simply just smash the computer terminal to end the threat. This choice of action leads to different results later in the game. These kind of choices persist throughout most of the game, making the puzzle-solving a breath of fresh air in the adventure gaming genre. Primordia gives the player real choices with real consequences. Some are minor choices, some are major events - but all of them will influence how the story plays out and concludes.

Within the first few minutes of gameplay, it may appear to solely consist of self-aware robots surviving in a harsh world long after man has disappeared. However, the story takes a sharp turn into many ethical, religious, and moral issues which ultimately result in an extremely well-written and thought-provoking story. As the game unravels, the robots go as far as to ponder their creator, the meaning of consciousness, and the difference between right and wrong. The player is presented with many different morality choices during gameplay that will determine the ending, and ultimately the fate of their world as a whole. Primordia is especially known for its symbolism, especially as to how it relates to religion in our world. Some of the robots believe they were created by Man (God) and others don't believe it, or refuse to accept it. Since man no longer exists in Primordia's world, it is a constant source of debate among the robots. Horatio, the character we assume the role of for the duration of the game, even has an inventory item called "The Book of Man" which is symbolic of the bible. This type of symbolism runs deep in the game, and for the careful observer, all sorts of parallels can be found between our real world and the game world.

Many of the robot denizens that populate the game world have their own goals, personalities, and quirks. Their personalities change over time based on the player's interactions with them, and what choices the player made. Whether it's the comic relief from our sarcastic sidekick Crispin, to the lone robot who guards the Shrine of Man, each and every character no matter how minor is given a level of unique detail and depth that makes them feel alive and a part of the world.

 A few tedious puzzles

There are a few tedious puzzles in the game which will require either a photographic memory, or a pen and paper, to solve. One glaring example is a puzzle where you need to stop an argument between two robots that results in a rather complicated math equation. Another such example is having to use a computer terminal which, when accessed, simply gives you an open-ended 'Search' query and not much else to go on. It's only through some trial and error that you ultimately figure out how you're supposed to be using the terminal, but it's pretty unintuitive in how it's presented.

Every character feels like they have a history and realistic personal motivations, even when they're left unexplained. Mae's friends are all different yet interesting in their own ways, like Gregg who's always happy to see her and helps Mae feel like someone truly cares, and Bea with her biting sarcasm and apathy that seem to cover up her more complex issues. The residents of the town also talk about things in ways that are true-to-life, like how they gossip about their neighbors as you listen in, or just flat-out tell you sometimes to leave them alone. Every character in the game feels like a real person, whether they're central to the story or just one of the NPCs you see sitting on their porch all the time.

 The simplistic gameplay is surprisingly fun

Running around the side-scrolling town as Mae day in and day out is more enjoyable than it sounds at first. It's mundane, but there's a lot of meaning to find around the town if you're willing to look for it. You go wherever you want, finding out stories about the townspeople and the town itself, or hanging out with friends for scripted story moments. Poking around all over town to find out the history is pretty cool, like the underground diner that Mae used to steal from back in the day, or the old shopping mall that barely gets any customers anymore. When you're not talking to people or going somewhere, you can play around with the rhythm mini-game as you practice with Mae's bass either in her room or in her old band with her group of friends. You can fall into a nice habit of checking in with the NPCs and locations you care about most, almost like in real life where you prioritize the people and places you spend the most time around.

The coming-of-age story in Night in the Woods is unconventional for a video game, making it more unique and intriguing. After dropping out of college, the main character, Mae, struggles with her own disillusionment in life and refusal to grow up, all the while her old friends find success and move on without her. You join in on that struggle as you live as Mae: aimlessly going around town talking to everyone and listening to their worries, browsing your laptop when you're supposed to be doing other important things, and even pressing a button to wake up in bed every morning as a reminder of how mundane life can be. You see all the ways she doesn't necessarily want to grow up, wishing she could stay a kid forever, but then she talks to an old acquaintance who thinks she's washed up now, making her feel anxious about her failings as a young adult. This type of story is familiar for anyone who has also had a hard time with similar problems, and eye-opening for anyone who hasn't.

Night in the Woods is set in Possum Springs, once a booming mine town but now a forgotten speck on the map, rife with poverty and decay. Its history is based on several real Adirondack towns, and its portrayal of rural decline is painfully accurate. The townspeople you talk to lament about having to close down their businesses, or wonder out loud how they'll make ends meet. Everyone's economic hardships feel real and relevant to anyone who's gone through the same thing or knows someone else who has.

 Some pacing issues with the story

The story slogs through the premise of Mae's anxieties and disillusionment for a long time until it suddenly switches somewhere in the middle. There are a few hints here and there about how and why the plot becomes a murder mystery, but these things seem inconsequential and not as important as Mae's personal issues. It ends up feeling strange to change things up partway through to something unrelated to the original premise. While the murder mystery isn't necessarily bad, it would have been nice to see a more focused insight and resolution to Mae's young adult troubles.

 The main character is insufferable at first

It's hard to like Mae from the start for a few reasons. She's extremely self-centered, she likes to steal for the thrills, and she has no interest whatsoever in fixing her shortcomings. Her life seems to be one awkward moment after another where you can't help but cringe in embarrassment, like in one early scene where she gets drunk at a party and blabs away about her personal problems after spending hours telling herself she wouldn't. As you get to know her, Mae might grow on you, but if you're the type to lose your patience with people who are immature, then you probably won't like her all that much.

 Main character Javi is very likeable

Main protagonist Javi is a bit of screw-up and the black sheep of his family when the story starts. However, as the world starts to fall apart, he quickly grows into his own and becomes a very likeable character. He is forced into many tough situations where he is always putting his family's safety above his own, and as a result, we get to watch him grow as a person. Overall, he is very easy to relate to and it's fun to cheer him along on his journey from goofball to hero. Javi is a great new addition to the series.

TWD: A New Frontier features a brand new story in The Walking Dead universe with an all new cast of characters. This time around, you play as Javi, an ex-baseball player with a gambling problem who is trying to protect his family during the zombie apocalypse. Javi is somewhat of the black sheep of the family, but as the world devolves in chaos, he is forced to step up and protect his sister-in-law, nephew, and niece after his brother disappears. The four of them hit the road together to salvage for supplies and search for a new safe place to call home. During the course of the story, you'll be fighting for survival in this messed up world, meeting interesting characters, running into plenty of problems, and making really tough choices to save yourself and your loved ones along the way.

Even though we take on the role of the new character Javi this time around, an old fan favorite, Clementine, makes an appearance and becomes heavily involved in the story as well. The inclusion of Clementine in the story and the newfound relationship between Javi and Clem really adds a wonderful touch of familiarity to the series, while still giving us an all new story to play through. We get to see the world through Javi's eyes, instead of Clem's, which is an interesting perspective shift.

QTEs are used during action sequences, which is fine, but sometimes they are used in places where they are not needed, such as pushing a dumpster to block a doorway or connecting some wires. These unnecessary QTEs disrupt the pace of the story at best, and at worst, completely ruin immersion by having to repeat the same frustrating sequence over and over when you mess up.

For a $25 game, only having seven to eight hours of playtime among five episodes is pretty poor. Each episode is only 60-90 minutes long, whereas episodes in the other two games in the series were around three hours apiece. While the story itself is great, it is overall much, much shorter than season one and two, which may be a great disappointment to some.

 Some choices will be biased towards Clementine

The whole reason season one and two existed was to tell the story of Clementine. She has grown into the beloved character of the franchise. This third installment in the series, however, has us playing as a new character named Javi. Clementine is still heavily involved the storyline, and this is where the issue arises. Sometimes we are asked to make choices as Javi that involve Clementine. However, since we've built up a strong liking for Clementine over the past two games, it's way too easy to swing all choices in her favor - even if Javi wouldn't actually make those choices himself. This can be bit a immersion breaking and make for some rather biased decisions that make little to no sense in the actual context of the story.

 Well-written storyline with many subplots

The story begins with two federal agents investigating a murder a little outside the strange, surreal town of Thimbleweed Park. While the initial main focus of the story revolves around solving the murder, it quickly branches out from there as the agents enter the town and start questioning the locals. During this investigation, a bunch of new characters (three becoming playable) and their respective subplots and stories are introduced into the game. The murder soon fades into the background, as the personal stories of the playable characters take front and center. Each playable character's story will be experienced in full resulting in being able to see the same overarching storyline from a multitude of different viewpoints. Each of these subplots are well-written as they all relate to each other in some way, offer a fresh perspective, and also contribute plot elements to the main story as a whole. Throughout the game, the writing is consistent and each of the various subplots and story elements all serve to reinforce the overarching story. Near the end of the game, many of the plot points have been neatly addressed and concluded, resulting in a rewarding game experience that really prioritizes a story-first approach.

There are five playable characters total. Two are available from the start of the game, and three more have their own scenario to play through when first introduced into the game. These scenarios showcase the characters' backgrounds and personalities via their own mini-storyline that draws heavily on comedy and allows the player to learn more about each character. Each of these scenarios concludes with them joining the main storyline where you are free to swap between them at will. Each and every playable character has their own goals, which are made clear on their personalized to-do lists, which act as a quest log of sorts, and help guide the player on what to do next to keep the story moving along. Among the five playable characters you will play as two federal agents, a clown with a swearing problem (although this is bleeped out in game), a lovable nerd who aspires to be a game developer, and even a ghost who is trapped and can't pass on into the afterlife. There are also a dozen or so supporting characters, and while not controlled by the player, were not neglected in their writing. From the town's sheriff, who also seemingly acts as a front desk clerk and coroner - although he adamantly denies this fact to hilarious effect throughout the game - to the bum outside the convenience store who begs for change, each and every one is well developed with their own quirks and personality that are artfully consistent throughout the entire playthrough.

Most of the city of Thimbleweed Park and it's surrounding areas are immediately available to explore and take in the scenery. While some of it is gated by story for gameplay reasons, there is still a huge amount of content that is available to immerse yourself in the minute you start the game. As the game progresses, the explorable area becomes bigger and bigger as more locations are discovered. A fast travel map system is introduced, making it quick and easy to get wherever you want to go with a few clicks. This is extremely helpful when moving from one end of the map to the other, and shaves away hours of travel time by the time the game concludes.

I really liked the game when I first started playing it. Sure, it got annoying when the game kept referencing how 'great' it was because it learned from it's past mistakes with moon puzzles. I figured, I'm just not a fan of jokes like that, so this is personal issue. But the game goes on and on in referencing itself and the fact that it's the game and SPOILERS the ending is no different. It felt like a waste of the grand story it was building, all just to say "Aren't we so smart? Did you see how we broke the 4th wall? Bet you didn't see that coming!" Overall could've been a great game, but in it keeps stopping an interesting cast of characters and story to sniff it's own farts.

 Kathy is a very interesting protagonist

Kathy is tough on the outside - she rides a custom motorcycle, puffs on her favorite brand of cigarettes, and doesn't take lip from anyone. On the inside, however, she is battling her own personal issues such as her strained relationship with her family and coming to terms with the loss of her grandfather. These issues come to surface as the game goes on and help to flesh her out as a very dynamic character. She also has a very curious side. She is a college student majoring in journalism which helps to highlight both this inquisitive nature and refusal to back down from complicated situations. It is these aspects of her personality that send her out on the game's main adventure. When she returns to her hometown from college for her grandfather's funeral, the secrets of his life and the mystery surrounding his death strongly intrigue her and prompt her to take action. Notebook and cigarettes in hand, and cruising around on her motorcycle, she sets out into the town to question the locals, search multiple locations, and get answers by any means necessary. Throughout all her adventures and interactions, her sarcasm and wit shine through - she is both quick with words and very resourceful when it comes to solving her problems. By the game's end, she has proven to be a very capable protagonist whose many sides are revealed.

The accompanying background music for each location you visit fits the atmosphere incredibly well. Exploring a dark attic queues an ambient synth track with a creepy vibe. The church features a synth organ slowly playing a haunting tune. While visiting the cemetery, a reflective mellow melody plays out. The biker bar features a wailing guitar and drums in a catchy upbeat rhythm. In total, there are 25 songs, all original and made exclusively for this game.

Kathy Rain is a nod to the point-and-click games of the 90s era, so much so that is uses retro pixel graphics and the story itself takes place in the 90s. The interface is the typical click to move and hover over an item to interact. For example, hovering over a book will allow you to look at or pick it up. Everything you pick up is stored in your inventory, where you can then combine inventory items or use them on other objects in the environment to solve puzzles. All in all, it's smooth and easy to use, making it a great throwback game.

Much of the game consists of going from location to location questioning people, searching the environment for clues, and chasing leads, while Kathy keeps track of it all in her notebook. When she makes note of something in this notebook - either through a conversation or an environmental clue - it opens that topic up for dialogue with every character you interact with. This means that the bits of information you learn in one conversation or area will have you going back for round 2 or round 3 with a previously interviewed character or going back to an old area to comb for new information. Running around, discovering clues, interviewing the same people multiple times, and putting all the pieces together really drives the detective theme home.

Throughout the game, Kathy's search for answers sees her run into about a dozen different characters around the small town. Upon first glance, they all seem to be normal, everyday people. Just enough information is given where you really want to keep digging in and uncover more, helping to keep you guessing what each one's motives and goals truly are.
