For old desktop PCs, Puppy is great. But since laptop hardware is not only more difficult to upgrade, but also to maintain; reviving old laptops is less possible or useful. Also the rise of cheap tablets, 2 in 1s, Android devices generally and even Chromebooks makes Puppy increasingly ONLY useful for old desktop PCs. For portable USB distros, more secure and and better updated distros seem like better alternatives. See More

You can even save your settings and files for Puppy on the external device/media. Running off a live CD also has security benefits, as your system will reset to the known config after each boot. Puppy Linux offers a few different releases. The first is an Ubuntu based release called Tahrpup, by using this version the user is able to take advantage of all software and support from Ubuntu. The second version is called Slacko, which is built upon the Slackware binaries. The third is called Wary and it is built to support older hardware than the rest. And the fourth is called Quirky, which is used as a base to explore new ideas. See More
Can not be updated or upgraded. The software that comes with it is all you get no matter how old a version it is. It comes with open source drivers for NVidia (noveau) and if your card is not compatible with it the system will crash horribly within minutes. On some systems though KNOPPIX runs wonderfully. If it does work with your graphics card it's great and the best. Does NOT work with an Nvidia 6150SE. Does NOT work with a Quatro card. See More
I've been running Knoppix 8.2 persistent from various Laptops. Dell Studio XPS, HP Pav ZX6000, ASUS ROG G750JM, and it booted fast and was stable on all of them. Even opened a CAM assembly file in OpenCAD and played around with it on the Dell with 6GB RAM and the Intel HD graphics. Great amount of software. Anything you might need. Except havent figured out a how to hack dropbox to work. Tried compiling from source but ran into some Nautilus dependency issues. See More
Its full of games and it has all applications and commands you need! Its too very very fast!!! See More
While it has a nice layout Slax's lack of an installer tool like Tinycore's just can't be justified. It seems strange that it comes built in with programs that some users may not want, yet it doesn't have an easy way to install it. Due to its heavier use of RAM, built in software, and lack of an installer its hard to choose it over TC. See More
