Creates dependence on the application with the promise that the content is yours but that cannot be entirely true without the application being free and open source software. You will end up altering the way you create the content to take advantage of Obsidian features and your processes will evolve for its workflows. I've been searching for an effective way to link all my notes taken all these years, Obsidian.md is great for its elegant UI and flexible plug-ins. I don't have to worry about import/export messes, just stick to the good old Markdown files and store them in Dropbox, still taking advantage of backlink functionalities those cloud service provides. I really wanted to use this app, but it just wouldn't work right with my system. The UI is nice and minimalist, and it's free but the light mode always appears dark grey, even when other programs on light mode work just fine. And the dark mode? Nothing appears on the screen and it is hardly visible at all. (Yes I tried increasing the brightness to 100% to kinda solve this issue, but I'd like to save my eyes thankyouverymuch) Don't recommend it until they fix that problem. See More
A Vault in Obsidian is like a database. Internal links and files are not shared across Vaults. Each Vault is opened with a separate instance of Obsidian. Each Vault can have its unique app settings and plug-ins. Useful if you have distinct/unrelated projects or "data spaces" requiring different workflows and data relations. See More
Logseq is one of the best tools I've used. I'm a meticulous notetaker who, prior to discovering the Zettlekasten method, had been focused primarily on notetaking apps and outliners. I had been a 5-year devotee of Checkvist, which I consider an outliner in its own category for its keyboard-driven (think Vim) nature. However, there were things it was missing. (And, in fairness, things it did better!) I had a stronger use case for personal knowledge management (PKM) than GTD to-do management. Logseq felt like a better fit for my PKM usage, especially with its incredible linking/backlinking superpowers. The daily journal is a great feature. It provides a single daily inbox for brain dumps where by way of tagged links everything remains findable and in its place. I am also fond of its org-mode TODOs. And finally, it's plain text, local-first orientation (https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first/) is the cherry on top of the sundae. I like that every topical page is just a Markdown file in the file system because this permits everything to come under git version control. See More

While many Markdown editors don't offer specific support for a certain type of workflow, or offer features for scientific workflows only, Zettlr offers features that help the writing process of journalists or researchers in the arts and humanities. After testing more than 30 alternatives, paid and free, I can definitely say that this is the best option, still not perfect, there are some bugs like creating / editing tables and resizing images, but the PROS destroy the CONS, easy quotes, WYSIWYM , attachments tab (supports attaching and opening links to any file), table of contents, TAGs, easy hyperlink between files (same as citations), export to many formats (like Word, HTML5, PDF)... The encryption only exists in transit, but not end to end. This makes the app more vulnerable to security threats. If you do happen to get hacked, watch data being changed in real time and then get locked out of your workspace. Good luck with trying to find a solution. The next time you press [[ or ((, you will be indexing through your previous notes, helping you connect the dots. You've started creating a graph of your knowledge! See More
