It is best for Quick Edits and is fairly simple to navigate. Not modern but minimal so highly usable.
The UI is lean and minimal. Everything feels quite fast and it is easy to add custom shortcuts for doing things like compiling, deploying or testing.
Gedit is a text editor. Simple and fast and it misses a lot of features. Most notably auto-complete for several languages.
Also worth noting the GNOME development team has actually removed features over time
