This laptop's display outshines most of the competition, from various lab tests it managed to score 106.8% sRGB color gamut. Which is better than the average for this display size (83%). I've owned an ACER Aspire (i7, 1 TbHDD) a couple of years ago. The build quality is atrocious and, as a laptop it is just 'delicate', ie. it breaks. If you have it on the desk and hold the screen to twist it slightly to get a better look (we all do that), the screen shatters, there is NO support around the screen edges, it is just really flimsy. Any screen breakage is NOT covered by ACER warranty, the staff in the Phillipines (I asked) will not budge, screen broken your fault. So you have to send it back for a repair where (they do tell you) they wipe the disk (when replacing the screen - WTF). When it came back the laptop was scratched, it was (apart from the screen) in much worse condition than when I sent it away. More calls to the support centre and another two weeks without the laptop. Then the screen surround started separating from the screen, it was about 2mm from the actual screen, you could get a lot in there. After much stuffing around with support and finally getting a manager from Australia after I complained (again they said it was my fault, I got it repaired, machine away another two weeks, HDD wiped. Anyway, would never buy ACER again, entirely unsuitable as a laptop. See More
This device is IMHO well built and will/should last. It was at the top of my list for an inexpensive yet well made laptop with good backup support. I've owned several HP laptops and, whilst never the fastest etc, always reliable and excellent value for money (which isn't just the buy price). The lack of a touch screen is a bit annoying, but I'm currently using Apple MBP and Apple are idiots when it comes to touch screen inventing a rather stupid, nobody wants, touchbar, but I digress. If I got 9 hours out of a laptop I'd be better than happy, the earlier HP laptops were 3-4 hours. I also like that, for a very thin device, there are ample ports. As noted, I tried out this machine and, for the price, was very impressed and wouldn't hesitate to purchase if I wanted a good, reliable and robust 13" laptop. I know the size of the SSD keeps the price down, but really, for a developer who would be using VMs I'm guessing (I do), so a Test VM, a development VM etc etc you need at least 16Gb RAM and at least 512GB SSD, Of course that takes the price up, but surprisingly you can get great deals. The current version has a touch screen, but configured with the RAM and SSD is a little more expensive: from US ebay $973 so for an extra $74 you get: 16Gb RAM, 512GB SSD, Touch screen - absolute bargain and something any developer would want. The HP Envy 13 offers good performance for its price. It can handle up to 16 Chrome tabs open simultaneously without even a bit of lag. Daily mainstream activities such as web browsing, editing files and even development work can be done on this laptop without any particular issues. See More
The Envy 13 has a relatively poor battery life. You may get about 9 hours out of it if you use it for general web browsing and some productivity work, but anything more than that (watching videos, light gaming) and you will start noticing that the battery life is considerably lower. See More
The cheapest configuration is a great choice for general non-intensive use - things like internet browsing, watching movies and similar tasks. Whereas the more expensive configurations are gradually more capable of intensive tasks, like video editing or gaming. It’s not as good as a specialized computer built for a specific purpose, like a video editing laptop with an enormous RAM size or a gaming laptop with a superior graphics card, but it’s a very well-rounded, reliable laptop. Two display choices are available for the XPS 15, an Ultra HD touchscreen or a Full HD non-touch screen. Both screens have a very wide array of colors as they cover approximately 100% of sRGB color space. The viewing angle is around 170 degrees. However, at 45 degrees, slight color change can be noticed. With around 350 nit output for brightness, it’s a viable choice for outdoor usage. All of this makes it an amazing display. See More
It's slow, loud and the thing actually buzzes and whines under load. Like you can hear it when you move the mouse around. They all smell weird too, the decade old plastics gas out and make it smell like a dentists office in my room, not thanks. Never falling for the "oh just buy an ancient business laptop" meme ever again. Maybe last year's model off the lenovo outlet, but laptops this old need to be taken out back and put down, also libreboot is a huge placebo. See More
