Users are not limited to using what only should work best for a certain class, they are free to level up any skills they wish which all work well together.
Players tap and drag their character around the screen and have a bar at the bottom with quick actions such as spells. This makes for an easy and intuitive way to control the game.
Even though a level may say its best to be a certain character level , lets say 29, it often happens that the player needs to be a lot higher in order to actually win the stage.
Bastions soundtrack sets the atmosphere perfectly. It's so good that although supergiant games had no intentions of releasing the soundtrack, demand from fans resulted in it being released and some tracks having over a million plays on Spotify.
The RPG elements combined with the battle mechanics make the core gameplay fun and varied as the weapons/items/abilities/upgrades play out very differently from each other.
Mage Gauntlet is primarily focused on action-based gameplay and tends to forget many traditional RPG-elements such as upgrading and gathering loot. Mage Gauntlet is filled with corridor fights that aren't ideal for extended play, while boss fights lack variety because they all behave in a similar way.
The magic system in Mage Gauntlet consists of a limited moveset of four spells that need to be replenished from in world urns, making for a bit of a balancing act of when to use spells in order to get through the tougher parts of each level.
While borrowing from many RPG greats from the past, the plot feels a bit derivative while also falling a bit flat. Better writing could have definitely helped flesh out the adventure more.
There are many items and weapons to be found in the game as well as many choices in how to level a character. This also creates a good reason to replay the title in order to find items not seen yet or create character classes not used yet.
Levels in the game are grid based, meaning the character can only move in a four way gird of tiles, ut once landing next to an enmy the game goes to a turn based combat system more like a JRPG. This makes for a compelling mixture of tactics and turn based play.
There is a fair bit to see in the game including 4 towns to explore, but it is the vast open wildernesses in the game that show how large the title actually is.
Players can choose from a Warrior, Priest, Mage, Assassin and Summoner, each that have their own special abilities when creating their four characters.
Some people may be nonplussed about having to constantly balance their characters stats, weapons and armor. This is definitely a very hands on type of old school RPG.
