7/8 length (mid calf) bridges the gap between 3/4 (under the knee) which are great in summer but often too cold for winter, and full length which are great in winter but can get too hot in summer. They're a good year-round option
As the pattern is radial, when it stretches it still has a flattering look around the thighs where other patterns can make troublesome areas appear larger

The tights come in two different types of fabric, and the silky smooth ones rip because they are much thinner material and snag more easily. While they mostly likely won't snag while working out, a sharp nail or a fall will probably leave a hole.
