By using many different mechanics such as charge timers for moves as well as matching and moving certain groups on a field in order to perform defensive or offensive maneuvers allows for many different strategies that can be used to win a battle. For what is essentially a match-3 game the level of planning that can be used is pretty deep.
M&M Clash of Heroes has a lengthy campaign, even for console standards. Clocking in at around 24 hours to beat the game it will provide a tons of playtime that for the cost of $4.99 is difficult to find anything on mobile comparable with that type of storied campaign.
There are touch screen issues with the game where players find it difficult to maneuver the map precisely. Considering Ubisoft has not updated the games since its release it's doubtful this issue will get fixed.
While the original target of the game may have been young adults or children due to its release on the DS (a mainstay of gaming for kids) the writing shows its roots and may come off as a bit childish.
Along with the main story mode (which is the meat of the game) there are optional modes of play such as Endurance mode and a way to access all mini-games found in the story mode to be played at ones convenience. This extends the gameplay by allowing the user access to modes that are quicker in play or a side distraction to the main story.
The RPG mechanics add a lot of depth to the play as the player is able to not only upgrade their player but to collect new weapons and armor which requires some thinking and constant management of their player.
Sadly the game can be unbalanced due to those that pay real world money getting a great advantage of powerful characters to use. The amount of time it would take a non paying player to earn the necessary characters to be able to compete globally would take so long that it is basically impossible.
Unlike the Disney owned Marvel movie universe, which does not contain X-Men (due to their movie rights being owned by the Fox studio) Marvel Puzzle Heroes does contain X-Men characters which greatly expands the lineup along with Guardians of the Galaxy, SHIELD and Avengers characters.
The meat of the game is the multiplayer mode where players can face of against AI controlled teams that other players in the game have built up. This is an endless mode in the game that one can play without ever reaching an end.
After the first levels, AI luck becomes a sadistic tool to let you waste your precious time. Nothing counts, troops, strategy are almost 0. It's a slot machine.
Through asynchronous play users can play their friends or random people easily as each can take their turn when they want, which is convenient for a mobile device that is often not used for hours on end.
