I've used Remote Desktop several times usually to help friends and family with technical problems. It's so easy to set up that I could explain it to my grandma over the phone! The connection is usually great and I only have good things to say about this service.

Every few minutes the sharer gets a popup asking if they want to continue sharing the screen, while the popup is shown the viewer can't control anything. This is important in case the sharer forgets to close the connection.

It is buggy since Version 3 came out. Sometimes, even the keyboard does not work when on a remote machine. Often, the connections just break. Also, the cross-platform does not work as it should. For many use cases, even Windows RDP is better

It just works
On Arch Linux, that's a huge PRO. Also, you can access all your USB devices, all your monitors, sound, printers, etc. Everything just works, everywhere. Super easy to setup, with lots of features if you like to adjust every little thing.

Port forwarding must be setup for access to remote behind router
There is no login used to find other machines I own. TeamViewer and Splashtop were both faster. NoMachine was very CPU intensive for an older Win 7 machine I tried it on, the image kept pixelling and screen would not resize properly.

Peter J. Mello's Experience
At just over $40/year, this has long been the best value proposition in the remote desktop access space for years, IMO. The cross-platform support is quite deep, and the simultaneous provisioning of their graphical NX protocol, SSH and HTTPS web app access covers all the bases. Everything in life is a tradeoff, of course, and here that manifests as a high-level of technical knowledge in order to configure it appropriately to the environment. It does very little to assist in punching through firewalls and any type of NAT, UPnP is about all there is out of the box. I can live with that though at this price point because it's performant, reliable and does exactly what it says it does for a fairly trivial expense. Support is great, too; these guys have been around the block more than a few times and their focus is on the protocol and not the front-end.

It's not for screen sharing, but for remote management
Microsoft Remote Desktop is developed for mostly enterprise users for remote control, not to share the screen with a friend. It lacks firewall support, and is much more complicated to setup properly than some other apps, designed for fast and easy sharing.

Too many variations of clients and servers (apps) and paid subscriptions to choose from for different scenarios
There's a host of downloads involved. It shouldn't be so complex to decide what software to download because of their respective services or featuresets. It should just be one client and one server with options to turn on or off different feature sets.
