The Garmin nüvi 2789LMT uses built-in Bluetooth and a dedicated Garmin Smartphone Link app to connect the GPS to your Android or iPhone device. You can input addresses in your smartphone to start the navigation on the GPS later, and it's also possible to save your favorite addresses via the mobile app. You can transfer data between the GPS and the Smartphone Link app with a single tap.
The 2789LMT series perform well in terms of accuracy and is able to connect to GPS satellites within a couple of minutes. Positioning is perfect, even in complex traffic situations and all maps are accurate and logically displayed.
The display on the nüvi 2789LMT use the capacitive touchscreen technology, just like modern smartphones. This allows you to easily pinch and zoom and touch the display gently. Some other GPS devices in the same price category also have a touchscreen but aren't capacitive (such as the TomTom GO LIVE 1535M) and are a lot harder to control as a result.
The HD Traffic feature of the TomTom GO LIVE 1535M shows you accurate and up to date routes, while displaying relevant information of the display such as speed limits and recommended driving lanes. The IQ Routes feature is crowd-sourced, which means it's constantly improving.
The 1535M offers internet functionality and allows the user to connect with a number of different online applicaties, such as Expedia, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Google Local Search and Twitter.
The GO LIVE 1535M has a recommended retail price of $199, including one year of the TomTom HD Traffic subscription service. After this period, a yearly subscription renewal costs $59.99. For comparison: a similar yearly TomTom service on smartphones only costs $19.99.
The TomTom features a search function for Places of Interest (POI's), such as restaurants, entertainment venues and fuel stations. These locations are spread in different categories, but searching for them can be quite annoying due to a clumsy category system. For example, restaurants can all be found under one and the same category, which makes it tedious if you're looking for a specific type of restaurant.
Because the GO LIVE 1535M uses the cellular GSM network, some interference through the speakers of your car may occur, resulting in annoying static and buzz sounds.
