 Amazingly fun collection of mini games and experiences

The lab is a collection of a bunch of very fun mini games. You get to use a bow and arrow to defend your castle against waves of enemies, control a fighter drone in a classic arcade style shoot-em-up, repair a Aperture science robot, explore the secret shop from Dota and more. Although each game is simple, they are all very well executed and make fantastic use of VR mechanics.

The Lab is a mini game collection created y Valve, who are know for a very specific witty sense of humor. That is not lost in The Lab whatsoever as the writing is cleverly funny, which makes a mini game collection game all that more enjoyable.

 Non game sections are really interesting

The user can stand on the top of an Icelandic mountain top and look around, there is no game to it, it is just an experience but one that is quite interesting as it is almost like actually being there.

The mini games are quite short and will not provide a whole lot of entertainment. The purpose of this title is to showcase what room scale VR is capable of (which it does well), but when considered as a game for those interested in gaming it falls a bit short.

 Makes you feel like a badass

The movement scheme is by far the best in any VR game. Jumping, sliding, wall-running, back-flipping, ground-slamming, slow motion, trackpad or teleport locomotion, it's all there. And there are tons of settings so that you can tweak the movement to your exact liking. Add to that a bow, swords, pistols, shotgun, machine guns, many throwable weapons, and a deep relic system that adds many different abilities and modifications. This game should be held as the golden standard in VR development. And there's so much more coming! The fun never ends with this game.

 Flexible ninja fighting

You can use a bow, swords, pistols, fully automatic weapons, throwing knives, or combinations - the common denominator is that you get to stylistically carve your way through enemies leaving flying bodies in your wake, feeling like a total badass.

 The ultimate VR experience

No other VR game offers this much freedom in movement, it's truly amazing what you can do in this game. It's still Early Access and you should look forward to the constant stream of updates that come from this team. They are by far the most responsive development team in a VR game in dealing with bugs and taking people's feedback into account and implementing suggestions. If you got an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive and want a game that truly makes you feel badass this is the one to get.

Simple things like crouching during a slide to slow it down, prediction of moments when you want it, make you feel like slowing time is just a natural power you possess.

Once each mini game has been played through, there is not much incentive to continue playing. While it does service as a nice proof of concept to show off to friends, the lasting appeal of this game is basically zilch.

 Plenty to do

First there are the objectives for each of the 4 jobs available, which usually in total take about two and a half hours to three hours. Once you finish that you get three modes you can add on to any of the jobs, being, bouncy mode, zero g mode, and dollhouse mode. There is also lots of things to mess around with and small things that make it great, such as being able to copy your hand or brain in the copy machine.

While the game does require both Vive controllers to be used, more often than not only one will be in use. On top of this the games found within are all simple tasks, such as layering sandwich ingredients one by one or stamping resumes of employees that need fired. Basically all the games within are take object from point A to point B, which many be a bit too simple for some.

The point of the game is that those with the manual are not able to actually see the bomb, this can be difficult to achieve when using a regular monitor to play the game, as someone could sneak a peak. Using a VR headset guarantees that no one with the manual will be able to see the bomb as it is only visible to the one wearing the VR headset.

 Bomb defusal manual is easily accessible

The manual can be viewed as a PDF download as well as a static webpage, which gives easy access to any mobile device as well as PC. On top of this the manual can be printed out for those that would rather navigate tactically, which is often the easier way to go due to touch and ease of flipping pages (over a tablet or phone). Basically you are able to pull up the manual in any way you prefer, which requires little preparation, even on short notice.

One person has the bomb on screen, and 1-5 "experts" need to consult the manual (either online or printed out). Thing is: the bomb defuser can't see the manual, and the experts don't see the bomb with its various modules. The person who sees the bomb will have to precisely say what they see, and then the experts will frantically flip through the manual to find the instructions for that particular module. To succeed, you will all have to work together.

 Hilarious situations arise as tension increases

Both sides in the game can not see what the other does, creating a situation of confusion that needs a good bit of team work. A ticking bomb adds the tension needed for players to spit out the first things that come to mind when describing strange symbols or patterns.

 Morse code section difficult for those with dry or bad eyes

There is a morse code module section of the game that relays morse code through visual cues, in order to understand the code the player will need to not blink for 3 seconds straight. While for most players this is not an issue, those that have chronic dry eyes or any other condition that requires blinking a lot, the code will be difficult if not impossible to understand. An optimal solution would be a setting to change this to audio cues, but sadly that is not an option.

 Puzzles may become stale after repetitive play

Particular modules in the game may be seen after playing repeatedly, which will make for easier play and quicker puzzle solving. This will have a tendency to make the gameplay feel stale due to ones familiarity with the puzzles. One example, is the Keypads module where the defuser will need to describe strange symbols. Part of the fun is struggling to describe something, or figure out what is being described and calling the other person an idiot for not getting it.

 Unique blend of rhythm gameplay and racing-like speed

Thumper is a rhythm game mixed with fast-paced action, setting itself apart from other titles in the genre. Your "character" is a vehicle that runs on rails in a track, with certain speedbump-like indicators on the road that show up in sequence. You have to press the button prompts in time with your vehicle driving over the indicators, ideally to the correct rhythm to the beat to rack up points. It can be tough going at full speed and catching all of the button prompts while staying in-sync with the song, but the payoff is incredibly satisfying.

 Intense controls and responsive feedback

Other than visual cues, the visceral feedback you get from timing your button presses just right helps keep you on-beat. Getting that timing down rewards you with an addicting rumble, helping you feel the rhythm in your hands. With your vehicle moving at such crazy speeds, pressing the right buttons on-beat simulates the feeling that you're really in the driver's seat, listening to the music playing at full volume all around you. Pressing the buttons correctly with feedback helps keep you glued to the game, motivating you to go after higher and higher scores.

Thumper looks stunning. The futuristic vibe with the flashing blues, purples, and reds everywhere. The road your vehicle travels on jets through a seemingly endless void that changes depending on the stage, such as showing off bosses that appear as large, abstract enemies looming overhead. The trippy visuals are pretty neat, making the game stand out more along with its unique gameplay.

 Playing in VR adds a whole new layer to the game

Virtual Reality makes Thumper much more fun and intense. Along with the feeling of the controls putting you in the seat of the vehicle, you're actually put into the game itself, surrounded by the visuals. The lights, the music, and the rumbles all feel more up-close-and-personal, as if you're part of the environment itself. Thumper is compatible with VR on both PlayStation 4 and PC, so anyone with a headset for either platform will be able to try it out for themselves.

A single playthrough will only take you about seven hours. However, if you go for a completionist playthrough to chase after high scores, then you'll get an extra dozen or so hours out of the game.

Thumper can be too hard if you've never played a rhythm game before. Because everything moves at such high speeds right from the start, you may miss a lot of the button inputs and get discouraged. Even for experienced players, it takes some practice before getting used to the flow of gameplay.

The lightsabers in the Star Wars universe are implemented very well in Trials on Tatooine and the tracking with the Vive's motion controllers is extremely precise - as if you would hold an actual lightsaber in your hand.

The Star Wars experience in Trials on Tatooine is extremely short, as the majority consists of an interactive cutscene. Gameplay sections such as deflecting lasers with your lightsaber only last a few minutes. The entire experience can be completed in less than 15 minutes.

The minimum system requirements of Trials on Tatooine are quite high, as a GTX 970 graphics card or higher is required to play. In order to get the most graphical fidelity out of Trials on Tatooine, a very beefy GPU such as the Titan X is required.
