One of the main staples of having grown up in the 80's was Disney's after school cartoons. One of the more popular cartoons in this series was DuckTales, a tale about a rich uncle and his three nephews. To capitalize on the cartoons popularity Capcom created a platformer game from the franchise for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Unlike a lot of branded games of the time (E.T, Goonies) DuckTales turned out to be a very good game. One that just about anyone who grew up in the 80's should be familiar with, and even if not is at least familiar with the cartoon itself.
So now that 80's children have grown up and have jobs and money, the current trend is for companies to capitalize on that nostalgia. DuckTales: Remastered is an effort in that direction that sees the original NES title remastered with HD graphics and released on every platform known to man.
The original DuckTales for the NES was created with the MegaMan engine by the main MegaMan design team. This allowed for a non linear gameplay design as well as many hidden areas, paths and treasures. The HD remakes still has all of this included in the game.
The levels and areas in Super Mario 64 capture the light-hearted feeling that we've come to know and love from Mario games. There are lovable characters, entertaining interactions, and ridiculous missions that have made many players fall in love with this game.
Super Mario 64, as a free-roaming, open-world game, was a precursor to later groundbreaking games such as Grand Theft Auto, and has been cited by Peter Molyneux as one of the 5 most groundbreaking games of the last 20 years for this reason.
3D games prior to Mario 64 were somewhat all over the place with their control schemes, and game developers were still struggling to use the third dimension they now had access to. SM64 is a freeform game that makes the most of its 3rd dimension with fantastic control and camera orientation that we take for granted these days, but was highly innovative in its own time.
HeroQuest is a perfect activity for a small gettogether. The game is meant for 2-5 players, a quest takes up to 90 minutes.
Not only is it simple to learn and easy to set up, but it requires good teamwork and communication between players. There’s also always room for roleplay, which can lead to some humorous and memorable moments. Moreover, the playing surface is not too big, so there should be plenty of room for snacks and drinks on the table.
Since most of the actual dungeon construction is done by the gamemaster as the game progresses and more rooms are revealed, all you need to do before the game can properly start is bring out the board, let the players choose their heroes and introduce the quest.
