When comparing MechWarrior Online vs Battleborn, the Slant community recommends Battleborn for most people. In the question“What are the best niche online multiplayer games with active communities?” Battleborn is ranked 3rd while MechWarrior Online is ranked 5th. The most important reason people chose Battleborn is:
Battleborn mixes FPS gameplay and MOBA-like elements. You shoot, use special abilities, and gain exp as you kill enemies, allowing you to select new abilities as you level up. This adds a surprising depth to the standard FPS formula since a kill advantage will also make you stronger than your opponent. Fortunately, it's not just about being a good shot, since you also need to plan properly, use abilities at the right times, and know when to take risks and when to avoid them.

Pros
Pro Takes advantage of Battletech lore
There is more than 30 years worth of lore and world building behind every single Battletech/Mechwarrior/Mechassault game. This gives a good sense of world and background, even for first time players.
Pro Your favorite "unseen" mechs have made a comeback
Unseen refers to certain imagery, namely the visual appearance of a number of iconic BattleMechs, that has not been depicted in official publications since 1994 for legal reasons. The units as such—their BattleTech names, game stats and history—always remained part of the BattleTech canon.
Basically due to legal restrictions, many Mechs have been unused in the past that are now currently in this game to be used.
Pro Easy to start as beginner since changes made
Now lets beginners start the game with 10-20 million in game cash, allowing you to take your pick of any mech in the game + some gear to make coming in new much much easier
Pro A Potentially fun but difficult beast to master
If you can put up with the negatives and can find a good group of fellows and learn some tactics, it can be enjoyable.
Pro Hit registration is usually on point
Usually but not always the case. More or less it is serviceable and mostly a positive.
Pro It has gratifying mech building
The ability to personalize based upon your weapon preferences is huge. All through a discovery process and learning what works for you and what does not. Its the same concept behind what makes Armored Core games so entertaining, despite having awful gameplay, mechanics, and storylines.
Pro Some Mechs are straight up overpowered with certain builds
Certain groups of weapons or boats naturally complement each other, such as SRMs and AC cannons, or LRMs and lasers. Some configurations can be overpowered, which results in you having an advantage while other players are disadvantaged.
Pro Great blend of FPS gameplay and MOBA elements
Battleborn mixes FPS gameplay and MOBA-like elements. You shoot, use special abilities, and gain exp as you kill enemies, allowing you to select new abilities as you level up. This adds a surprising depth to the standard FPS formula since a kill advantage will also make you stronger than your opponent. Fortunately, it's not just about being a good shot, since you also need to plan properly, use abilities at the right times, and know when to take risks and when to avoid them.
Pro Plenty of loot to earn
The huge array of customization comes from all of the loot you earn as you play. Lootboxes are generous, giving tiered rewards such as epic gear, like high-powered weapons that you constantly want to aim for. There's also the nice addition of unique skins that you can unlock for each of your characters, helping them stand out even more from other players who may be using the same ones as you. After every battle, you may find yourself opening as many lootboxes as you can to get as much gear, weapons, and skins as you possibly can.
Pro Tons of customization for your characters
Thanks to a variety of gear from lootboxes and in-depth skill trees, you have a lot of control over how your character plays. Customizing your preferred character with certain gear with bonuses to damage or defense, for example, and then doubling down on those stats through the skills you pick is a great way to tailor your gameplay experience. You have many ways to make your character your own, which ensures that no two players will have the same experience. Whoever you spend the time to customize the most ends up feeling unique to your playstyle.
Pro Exciting online and local co-op
Playing Battleborn with a group of friends makes for a great time. Whether you move together as a tight-knit team or go off on your own and take down others as you see fit, you have the added bonus of being able to coordinate what happens to your team members. Having this advantage makes the gameplay more interesting, as you get the chance to plan out strikes for the best kill advantages. Talking over with your team on the best ways to take risks or hold back opens up ways for you all to earn as much experience points as possible and earn the best loot that you can.
Cons
Con P2W: Pay to not get mauled to death constantly
Trial Mechs are a joke. They are intended to allow you to get right into the thick of the action until you've saved up to purchase a mech of your own and customize it to your preferences. That however is never the case as you are constantly losing right off the bat, making it nigh impossible for you to make a real income in game, causing many newbies to turn away rather quickly. Until you spend some of that sweet sweet micro transaction cash, or by some miracle make the 10-17+Million it takes to create a viable mech build, then you are just gonna be eating bullets for a while.
Con Light mechs and machine guns rule
Light mechs are the bane of anything over 50 tons which shouldn't be the case. A 100 ton atlas should be the last target on a piranha pilots mind but in this game it's a main target.
Con Customer "Appreciation" Events are just a ploy
Customer "Appreciation" Events are simply a ploy to goad players into spending more money through the MWO website, so that players might receive a slightly different variant of a Mech that is "free". One must make high dollar purchases to get those mechs that may or may not be OP depending on what's been nerfed at the time.
Con Pre-order Mechs and Mechpacks
Every time one of these are introduced to the game, players find a way to abuse them and break the game. This causes PGI to Nerf everything globally through heat, charging, hard point restrictions or individual weapon nerfs. Some of said restrictions don't even make sense lore-wise: Since when has a gauss rifle ever needed charging in books and previous games? Never. They are always charged all the time.
Con MC: Mechwarrior Credit is worthless
It's an absolute waste of money in comparison to the mechpacks, collectors packs, and pre-orders, which come loaded with modules and goodies that are a real pain to unlock and pay for with MC and C-Bills.
On top of that, PGI seemingly punishes players who spend money on MC instead of Mechpacks by offering "Customer Appreciation" items that are of far greater value than rewards offered for MC alone, even if the dollar amount spent is the same.
Con Everything MWO online does, Hawken does better
MWO is slowly improving, but Hawken does it mostly right from the gate.
Con Aside from match making, there is no real game play
There is no alternative gameplay unless you want to jump into the meat grinder that is the quick match cue, or the faction cue which is the same thing with spawns and multiple lives per match enabled.
Con General social interactions
Making friends is hard since everyone in the match is booted at the tally screen. Nothing of the previous match is recorded, so you can't find the people you liked from the last match in order to friend them. Identifying people you want to play with and friend request must be done before the match ends, or you must wait till you meet that player again, which is not very likely.
Con You cannot easily create or communicate with clans in game
You can create a unit, but beyond that, you are severely limited to a poor man's AOL instant messanger, which is saying something. Once you are in a match, voice communication becomes enabled. If you dont have teamspeak or a mic you are very much out of luck.
Con The game cannot be played solo
It is not easily played solo, you must be on a good team or you get rolled.
Con The game is frustratingly hard, even for good pilots
The learning curve is quite high, but is somewhat offset by forgiving mech builds.
Con PGI may be ruining the franchise
PGI is taking a storied and noble franchise and running it into the ground by making the game Pay to Win.
Con Purchases you make are worthless the moment you make them
Spent 50 real dollars on an okay mech with an okay build but feeling a little buyer's remorse? Wanna sell it back to PGI for C-bills? Well too bad, with one exception (The Cicada Hero), most mechs and their parts are worth less than half of what you bought them for in game currency.
Con This video Explains things almost better than I can
Con Paint and decal items often cost as much as whole mechs
Paint, the most basic right to anyone who's ever played a mech game ever, it costs a lot in this game. When added together, cosmetic items are worth as much as individual assault tier mechs.
Con No players online
Con Boring story mode
There is little story in the game, and what there is, is often uninspired and boring. The narrative is pretty basic, and it will sound too familiar to you if you've played other popular shooter games. The gameplay in the story mode is also a bland horde mode that throws the same types of side missions at you over and over again. There's sadly not much here that's fresh or interesting.
