When comparing Avorion vs Boundless [Early Access], the Slant community recommends Avorion for most people. In the question“What are the best voxel-based games for the PC?” Avorion is ranked 10th while Boundless [Early Access] is ranked 22nd. The most important reason people chose Avorion is:
The game is beautifully made. The visuals are fascinating. The ship building process is not traditional. You can build any kind of ship you like. Weapon variety is huge. Game mechanics are smooth and easy to understand. Less graphical requirements. It works like a charm even on on-board graphics, though OpenGl graphics are known to cause problems in the games and slight lag/performance issues. Almost everything is available in the Demo version. The demo map is huge enough that it'll take you 2-3 months to explore if you play everyday for 2-3 hours. Plenty of weapons are upgrade options in the demo version. Multiplayer on LAN and Internet and Hosting capabilities, making it easier to play with your friends

Pro Free Demo
The demo of this game is available from the official website. The demo offers all the features of the game but in limited quantity. You can build custom ships but certain blocks are not available in the demo version, certain weapon types and logic upgrades are also not available in the demo version.
Pro Player Created Economy & Shopping
You can create a store anywhere & other players will stop by & buy the things they need/want. You can sell things that you crafted, things you found, harvested, hunted, traded, cooked, brewed, forged, extracted, compacted, etc. Some shopping areas have so much going on that they look like actual malls.
Pro 50 huge planets to explore plus random temporary special planets
The planets are vast - there could be a huge city on a planet and you might not know it until you look at an atlas/map. You can build anywhere on any of the 50 planets. When a special temp planet comes into the universe, you can warp to it & collect rare resources.
Pro Farming
There's regular crop farms & non-organic farms for things like combustion fuel & spray paint.
Pro Intricate Gear Forging
You fine-tune your ability to forge great gear with buffs, strength, speed, etc.
Pro Building - better than Minecraft
There are numerous blocks you can craft or buy from other players: soil, rock, sand, thorns, mold, timber, foliage, gem, metal, lucent gem, water, lava, trellis, glass, glass panes, etc. A lot of the blocks can be chiseled down to create almost any shape you'd like.
Pro Huge number of positive reviews
Cons
Con Time consuming
Be prepared to invest a lot of time, this is not a game for the impatient!
Con Slow updates for Demo Version
The devs are concentrating more on the full version. The demo version has not been updated since the last released (2016) 8.1.5 .
8.1.5 is stable but no major/minor updates have been seen so far.
Con Developers pick winners and losers. Also Pay to win.
Con Expensive
A pricetag of 32€ is a bit steep for an Early Access game.
Con The only con I would say is that it's a small indie game & receives large updates often
A lot of players get upset when the game makes big changes so that they can keep progressing & making the game better for everyone. This game is available on Steam & PS4 - but it plays like it's a new game in Alpha/Beta to some degree. They haven't added much character customization just yet & a couple of basic things like the chat system are still being implemented/created. If you don't mind these things, this game will have you hooked! Most of the current playerbase has logged over 3000 hours...it's very addictive!
Con GPU hungry
Requires a decent GPU to play.
