While the sound quality isn't what you would call spectacular, the noise reduction certainly is for the price. As is the case with most noise reduction systems the MDR-NC33s are best at cutting out continuous sounds like jet engines or trains (which these are particularly good at) but not so good at variable sounds like talking or screeching of metal on subways (which the plugs do a fair job at isolating).
