Hey! If you're looking for the best Nintendo emulators, check here, here, and here.

Do you have a particular Nintendo console in mind? Also, maybe you could share which OS you use, that would help to give better recommendations.

I want to turn the laptop into a Linux OS. As for the Nintendo consoles any/all. I also prefer emulators that don't require you to search on the web for independent image files, but rather allow downloading them trough their interface (if possible). The laptop is an old 64-bit Windows 7 w/ 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive space. It includes a decent NVIDEA GeForce graphics and sound card.

I see. I haven't seen too many options for console emulators on Linux. Maybe this question will be of help (I suggest looking into Dolphin emulator).

And if you need help choosing the right Linux distro for your computer, I think this question could be useful.

I do have my eye on Linux Mint, but can't figure out if Cinnamon or MATE would have better performance or if virtually the same, which is more bug-free. Desktop configuration for me doesn't matter as much as the capability of emulating a variety of old games (Ocarina of Time, the other Zelda's and Metroid mostly. However, if possible I would enjoy emulating the first Sonic and Mega Man games among others.)

Gotcha. In terms of DE, they should be fairly easy to switch if you don't like your initial choice.

I don't want to dual-boot (being an old laptop), how do I add both DEs onto the same OS installation?

I'm not sure about Linux Mint specifically, but I think it should be pretty similar to how it is in Ubuntu. You just install your desired DE through terminal and after that you can switch DEs from the Lock screen (at least in Ubuntu. But I'm sure that there's lots of Mint-specific tutorials on the internet as well).
