BlackBox is a tool for safely storing secrets in a VCS repository. It encrypts individual files in the repository using GPG, allowing them to stay encrypted-at-rest, and be decrypted on-demand.

Some version control systems (VCS) may need access to unencrypted data, with BlackBox this can be done by setting up roles. You can see how here. This can allow accessing encrypted data with a subkey with no passphrase which is useful if other system in your production environment needs to read it.
