Are there any advantages of using GPS Tracks VS using something like Garmin Basecamp? Or the other way around?

I'm actually not too sure on that. I'll look into it a bit for ya.

Hey there! I'm not an expert, but from what I know, you can actually backtrack when using something like Garmin. Have you used any of them? :)

I have a really old Garmin nuvi 2405/2505 series. I don't use it anymore. I use my iPhone for tracking routes while driving. I did a test with Gaia and found that the app quit on me several times while tracking the route. I'm not sure if it was because my battery dipped too much or if it was because my screensaver was going, or if it was because of memory management. I was taking pictures and testing out a bluetooth microphone transciever, the iPhone was the receiver and recording audio in the background with another app. I did see the lock capability Gaia has, but I imagine it would drain the battery hardcore if I kept the monitor on. This was just my first test. I still need to read the documentation and do furthur testing.

My immediate use case scenario is for mapping out road routes. I'm in a course where I'm learning how to be a driver education instructor. I started this course with the intention of teaching a family of refugees how to drive. One of them is deaf and is illiterate. In Oregon a deaf person can have an interpreter while taking the knowledge test, but not the skills test.

Part of the curriculum is creating and planning a route. Gaia has a really cool webapp, but it was slow as molasses and quite buggy on a slow connection while in the classroom and at home. I would get lines and spots/waypoints that I couldn't delete. Sometimes when I was adding a new waypoint between two pre-existing points, it would somehow not act as expected but connect to the beginning or end of the route. At one point which marker was the end and the start changed. I couldn't finish making a simple map in like 3 or 4 hours of time. So it's like OK, I need a real desktop client. Gaia doesn't have one. I know it'll take common gps formats though. I just don't know if it'll do the slick conforming to the curves and contours of the roads/trail like the gaia webapp/ios apps do using imported gps coordinates.

Once I'm done with this course in 2-3 weeks or so I'll be using the desktop app for planning outdoor activities or editing tracked routes I've made on the trail. I have fun getting lost and becoming "found" again.

Oh, how kind of you! Thank you for doing that. :)

I'm not very knowledgeable about maps and have no trouble at all getting lost. Haha. Anyway, since you need to map out routes, from what I've read, it has a function that will backtrack your entire route and can save up to 250 points. I think that's pretty good.

If you do choose to use an app, share your experience here and let us know. :)
