mcedit is a TUI (terminal user interface) text editor included with the venerable TUI dual-pane file mananger from GNU. The mcedit executable is just a symlink to mc that runs the internal editor and opens files specified as arguments on the command line. The editor is based on the terminal version of cooledit, an early standalone editor for the X Window System.

Pros
Pro Employs a GUI-style interface
Maybe the best thing about mcedit is the fact that its theory of operation is so instantly familiar to anyone who's used to a GUI-based word processor anytime during the last 30+ years. Instead of a command palette, buffers and the most unbelievably deep set of keybindings you've ever seen, you get a few primary functions mapped to the F1-F12 keys, and the rest is done through drop down menus. Yes, it sacrifices a lot of the power of a TUI, but you can also walk someone through short terminal tasks without spooking them as well.
