Pros
Pro Comfortable to work with
Sublime Text provides several features for making the editor itself comfortable to work with:
- Minimap provides a top-down view of the file, eliminates tunnel-vision
- Support for TextMate themes and window decoration themes
- Distraction-free mode
- Vintage mode - (vim-style editing)
- Everything is easily accessible from the keyboard
Pro Can be extended to have virtually any feature other editors/IDEs have through plugins
Sublime Text supports a large number of languages and general text editing features out of the box, but its most useful feature is its extensibility - Sublime Text uses TextMate's syntax declaration files to support new languages, has all its menus and keybindings generated from JSON files, and can be scripted to add new features using Python. If Sublime Text doesn't support a desired language or feature, it's usually not long before someone implements it themselves - examples include the plugin -package manager and the 'open in browser' command. For Python you might want to look at:
- SublimeCodeIntel - it provides better autocomplete and allows for symbol definition jumping
- SublimeREPL - allows running Python interpreter session in editor view
- Pylinter - great pylint editor integration
- Code Intel
- Sublime Rope
- Sublime Linter
- Python Auto-Complete
- Python Improved
Pro Fast
Sublime Text 2 is among the fastest editors as it is and Sublime Text 3 promises to improve the start-up time to become even faster.
Pro Versatile ways of editing through multi-line select and edit
Multiple cursors & column selection allow versatile ways of editing.
ctrl + d
will select the current word and each time the command is repeated add the next occurence of the word to the selection.
ctrl + click
or middle-mouse click
will place another cursor in the place that's clicked. Cursors can then be controlled together. This also allows selecting vertically.
Pro A lot of useful and mature plugins
There is a lot of plugins with long development history, which are cover many useful use cases, that a propgrammer can encounter.
Cons
Con High price for what you get
Sublime text offers some unique and interesting features, but for what you pay, it may not be worth it.
Con Annoying notifications in free mode
Free version of Sublime Text tends to nag the user to buy the software with popups.
