Pros
Pro Varied gameplay with many gamemodes keeps you busy
The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has three different multiplayer game-modes: Blackout mode, Zombies mode and traditional multiplayer. All of them are packed with new and exciting gameplay.
Black-out is widely considered to be the best game-mode in CoD Black Ops 4. It's a battle-royale mode, where each man can fight for their own lives or join up in four player squads. The map size puts the focus on fighting, while if you do die, the next match starts in just a few moments. Of course, supply-drops and helicopter assaults are not missing from the mode either.
This CoD comes with the most expansive Zombie mode so far in the series. It has three co-op experiences that you can tune and modify. There’s a forth one that comes with the season pass. Zombie mode is the part of the game where you can also experience some story between the zombie waves. It’s a series of short narrative challenges. The environments are inspired by ancient mythology and for example the sinking Titanic.
The traditional multiplayer mode in this CoD has been changed a little. Players now have an active heal, more health, and also the teamplay has been incentivized. What stands out is the Heist mode, where you purchase new guns after each round. For Counter-Strike fans, the Heist might be the new favorite game-mode.
The multiplayer modes definitely make up for the lack of single-player campaigns. The updated classic multiplayer mode, the engaging Zombie-mode and the new action-packed Black-out mode are all extremely fun and full of new experiences never seen before in the Call of Duty series.
Pro Black Ops 4 introduces Blackout, the most fun game-mode so far
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduces the new Blackout game-mode. It’s the most fun game-mode in Black Ops 4.
Blackout is a battle-royale mode – you drop from an airplane, land on the map, search the area for weapons and gear, and then try to survive until you’re the last man standing, while the circular game area slowly collapses.
You can choose to fight alone or join up in an up to four player squad. While it’s fun to play the mode alone, since you get a nice feeling of survival and progression, teaming up with friends gives you more firepower and makes winning easier.
The game-mode is similar to PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale, which are both massively popular. There’s something about this game-mode that keeps you playing many matches for hours at a time.
It’s worth picking up Black Ops 4 just for the Blackout mode. You’ll probably find yourself joining match after match just to get that perfect gear and be the last man standing.
Pro Wide array of classic multiplayer game-modes keeps you busy
The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has a whole list of traditional multiplayer modes. All of them are packed with new and exciting gameplay.
The traditional multiplayer modes include:
- Team Deathmatch, where you obliterate your opponents to reach a score limit and win the match. It’s the most traditional and most widely played classic multiplayer mode.
- Domination, where you try to control three Capture Points by standing on them. Getting your team to cooperate and stand on Capture Points together lets you capture the points faster.
- Free for All, which is a deathmatch, where you have no teammates. Your goal here is to kill other players to advance yourself on the scoreboard. Being great at sniping will help you out.
- Search and Destroy, where you have to plant bombs at target locations and defuse the enemy team’s bombs.
- Kill Confirmed, where your goal is to gather dog tags to increase your team’s score. You can have a lot of fun not picking up the dog tags and ambushing the enemy team instead, hoping they will find it too.
- Hardpoint, which is like the Domination mode, but with capture point areas moving around. They are predictable, so you have to make strategic decisions, whether you want to stay by the existing capture point or go and set up defenses for the next one.
- Control, where you have to either defend control points or attack and advance through the enemy team’s control points. Communication makes all the difference here.
- Heist, where the two teams fight over a bag of cash. Each round you can buy weapons, perks and in-game benefits for the money. If you’re a counter-strike fan, you’ll probably love this game-mode.
There are game-modes that may be familiar to you from other first-person shooters and there are game-modes that were present in previous Call of Duty games. There’s a lot of them, so if you get bored of one, you can move on to the other. They all differ in how you’re supposed to play them, so you always have to adapt and focus on different aspects of your first-person shooter skillset.
Pro Gameplay requires tactical thinking and cooperation due to a variety of 'specialist' roles
You can choose a 'specialist' character, which has its own equipment and role in the game. In order to win, you have to work together with other specialists.
- If you're for example Ruin, a bulky dude with a blast gun and grapple gun, you need to use your equipment to zip to better locations to advance your teams position.
- If you play as Firebreak, you get a piece of special equipment called Reactor Core, which emits a damaging radiation field and prevents your enemies from healing. You also get a flamethrower, so you could deal massive damage in close-combat, while your squad moves through a building
- If you choose Recon, you get supportive equipment to reveal enemies on the map. While you don't have massive firepower, revealing enemy locations lets your team take them out unexpectedly.
There are around 10 specialists in the game. Whichever one you choose, you have to communicate and cooperate with other specialists, and use your own equipment to work towards winning.
Pro Realistic and action-packed combat
The combat system in Black Ops 4 is realistic and action-packed. Combat movement feels realistic and the gunplay is very solid.
Firstly, there is no wall-jumping or other less realistic moves that can turn a classic first person shooter into a mess. The game feels realistic and this definitely adds to the satisfaction.
The movement is very fluid. When you’re running, reloading or shooting, the animations and movement are very smooth and give you a realistic feel.
The gunplay is solid, with a nice selection of weapons and nice-feeling shooting. Unfortunately, the different time periods in the game do not include weapons from different eras.
Though some may disagree, the gore that is present in the game adds to the realism. When you look around during combat, you will often find bloody body-parts lying around.
Overall, the combat feels amazing. It’s full of action, but slow enough to not turn into a quick-paced and bloody cycle of “fight, get shot, respawn”.
Cons
Con Demanding on your machine
Call of Duty games are known to be taxing on your hardware, and the Black Ops 4 is not an exception.
According to PCInvasion, the game can be too demanding for some low to mid-level systems. Having at least a Intel Core i5-2500K processor, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or equivalent is recommended if you want to enjoy high graphics settings, but also maintain a high frames per second. It's a multiplayer game, so if you have a low fps, it gives everyone else a competitive advantage over you.
