The variety of question types keeps the lessons interesting, and enables the student to improve in three aspects of language learning.

Teaches vocabulary out of context
Many of Duolingo's drills involve matching a word to its definition or typing the word based on its definition. It is more effective to study vocabulary in context.

Yonatan's Experience
I've been using Duolingo to learn Spanish for quite some time now, I enjoy it because it sort of gamifies the process of learning a new language. I also like that I can do it on my laptop at home or on the go using their app even though I have to say the app is much easier so I prefer the web version. The problem with Duolingo for me is that it doesn't really teach you the fundamental rules of the language, you just learn by example so it works for the most parts and I do learn a lot but when there are special cases it's pretty hard to pick up on why it happens so you have to rely on memory.

Uses fake and unrealistic sentences
Duolingo does not use authentic sentences written by native speakers. Its sentences are famously fake, unrealistic, and often meaningless; entire websites are devoted to joking about them. Here are some real examples: "Grandma is in the trunk." | "I am eating bread and crying on the floor." | "I have a knife."

Read sentences about specific interests
You can focus on your areas of interest by choosing to read sentences about specific topics. This makes it easier and more fun to read and study the sentences. Native-speaker audio and many different text-to-speech voices
WordBrewery has native audio for most Spanish sentences. It also uses text-to-speech voices from several sources including IBM Watson. You can, for example, set the text-to-speech voice to a Spanish speaker from either Spain or Mexico.

Pro
•••
Create automatic lists of example sentences containing any word
Whenever you find a word you want to study, you can use WordBrewery's Automatic List Generator to create a list of real example sentences containing that word. You can then print these sentences (with translations) to a PDF, create an audio file reading them aloud, export them to a flash card program, or study them on the website.

•••
Great for intermediate and advanced learners
Many language apps are too easy and useful only for beginners, but WordBrewery is useful for learners at all levels. It constantly finds new sentences to teach so you can never run out of content to study. Also, its Master level teaches you the 30,000 most common words in the language, which is about the vocabulary level of a university-educated native speaker.

Learn in context with no rote memorization or boring drills
WordBrewery users always study vocabulary and grammar in context, never through rote memorization such as memorizing definitions or grammar rules.

•••
Personalized courses that adapt to your current knowledge
WordBrewery's Course Mode uses spaced-repetition and selects different sentences for you based on your current word knowledge and which words you need to review. The courses are different for everyone. They introduce up to one new word per sentence and take you from your current vocabulary knowledge to mastery of all the target vocabulary in the course.

•••
Focuses on high-frequency vocabulary
WordBrewery focuses on high-frequency vocabulary to help you learn as efficiently as possible. Its sentences are selected because they contain many high-frequency words within a particular level. Beginner | 500 most common words (75% comprehension) Intermediate | 3000 most common words (95% comprehension) Advanced | 10,000 most common words (~98% comprehension) Master | 30,000 most common words (99.9% comprehension)

Short study sessions
WordBrewery teaches one sentence at a time, so you can learn vocabulary and grammar and make progress toward fluency even if you only have a few minutes to study each day.

Pro
•••
Uses real sentences from the news
WordBrewery uses authentic example sentences from recent news articles written by native speakers for other native speakers. This means you study interesting, relevant, and accurate content. Some other apps, by contrast, teach computer-generated, dumbed-down, artificial, crowdsourced, or inaccurate content.

Games do not end on their own
You have to decide when you've had enough playing the games, or set a timer. The games do not end the game for you, so it's not smart about conserving your energy or ending the session when you've learned the material or when you've gone beyond 25 minutes which is the limits of most people's ability to focus.
