Microsoft Natural 4K is Microsoft's "all the way" ergonomic offering, a split-key wired keyboard.
Ranked in these QuestionsQuestion Ranking
Pro Comfortable to use & very easy on the wrists
The Microsoft Natural 4K is designed to be more comfortable to type on than regular rectangular keyboards. They are curved to more naturally fit human hands - naturally resting our hands are angled, and when typing on a regular keyboard our wrists are constantly strained. This is taken into consideration with this ergonomic keyboard, and it can help reduce strain injuries from typing.
Pro Great value for money
While most ergonomic keyboards run for at least $100, this keyboard is significantly less. It may not have the same quality feel to it as the more premium boards, however it is very good value for somebody who is looking for a more comfortable keyboard without spending a small fortune.
Pro Front of keyboard can be tilted up so wrists aren't bent back
I find this incredibly a much more natural and comfortable position for my wrists than the standard front to back wedge of a standard keyboard.
Pro Wholly ergonomic configuration
Pro Lots of additional keys
There are lots of shortcuts to applications (which can be reconfigured for non - windows apps in linux)
Pro Great for people with big hands
Con No mechanical switches
This keyboard uses the commonly used rubber dome type switches. These switches require you to bottom out your keys while applying pressure, which forces your finger to land with a thud at the bottom of the key travel. After typing for extended periods, this can cause some finger strain.
Mechanical switches have the advantage that they activate about half way through the key stroke, which means over time you learn to reduce the force applied after about half way through the keystroke (where the switch activates). To keep typing accurate still, most of the switches offer either tactile (you feel a bump), or audio (a click sound) queue when it activates.
Con Not easily user configurable
It's hard to re-configure the default settings of the keyboard. Some users prefer to move a few keys around, however this is very difficult with the Microsoft Natural 4K.
Con Space bar is hard to press
Con Almost all the keys are hard to press
The keys can be stiff to press due to the force needed, so typing isn't very smooth.
Con No USB ports
Con The letters on the keys are erased very quickly.
In 2-3 months the keys A, S, D, C, V and L are blank!
Con No right hand windows key
Con Most "special" keys are not supported on Mac
This keyboard has a lot of extra functionality keys which could help get things done faster but unfortunately most of them are not supported on Mac even with the driver.
Con Only solves some RSI problems
While this does help with many RSI problems, it still has the ergonomic disadvantages of a standard keyboard layout.
